Accession of Pakistan into TIR Convention of United Nation.
The TIR Convention was organized by Nation Trade and Transport Facilitation Committee (NTTFC), Ministry of Commerce On 27th August, 2015 at Serena Hotel, Islamabad. The Convention meeting was chaired by Honorable Minister of Commerce, Engineer Khurram Dastagir Khan. The Minister has appreciated the entry of Pakistan into TIR convention and said that the accession to TIR Convention would enhance Pakistan’s connectivity with the region by creating corridors, linking Central and South Asia and China with turkey and Europe. He said that Pakistan entry into the TIR had come at the most auspicious time as the work on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was underway and the prospects of enhancing trade with Iran after lifting of sanctions is very much possible in coming months. The Minister also said that Pakistan’s geopolitical location in the heart of main North-South and East-West Corridors made this region a natural bridge between Asia and Europe via its transport communications. The Minister categorically mentioned that Pakistan offers optimum access to the land-locked Central Asian Republics-TIR Community to the Arabian Sea and beyond which will tremendously increase the transit and trade opportunity for Pakistan. Replying to a question the Minister said that accession to the TIR Convention would provide a great opportunity for Pakistani trucking and freight industry to upgrade and expand its fleet as TIR provides some minimum specifications for the trucks which could move under the TIR Carnet.
