UNDP Trade Initiatives

UNDP/UNCTAD Global Programme on Globalization, Liberalization and Sustainable Human Development
contributes to the better integration of developing countries into the global economy. At the level of selected countries, the programme supports government and stakeholders in the following areas:

  1. Competitiveness and clusters of enterprises;

  2. National economic governance;

  3. Multilateral negotiations, and

  4. Regulatory policies in strategic sectors such as energy, water and sanitation, agriculture and food.

The focus is on the interaction between various policies at the macro and micro levels, as well as opportunities for expanding the country’s policy space. Pakistan could be added to the countries included in this programme.

UNDP Asia Pacific Regional Initiative on Trade, Economic Governance and Human Development, based on the premise that trade, and trade agreements should be better aligned with broader objectives of human development, the programme:

  1. Facilitates the cross fertilization of lessons on trade and economic governance to develop appropriate policy responses through a lens of human development;

  2. Strengthens the ability of countries to define negotiating positions on trade that incorporate human development concerns and to achieve outcomes in trade negotiations that reflect these concerns, and

  3. Helps governments and the various stakeholders that are affected by trade agreements to CSOs to come together to defi ne their perspectives on trade regimes; to ensure that trade negotiating objectives advance the interests of the poor.

Under this regional initiative, country studies have been prepared on a selected issue on the trade negotiating agenda where the outcomes could have a major potential impact on the many people, particularly poor and vulnerable people in Asia. Pakistan has already been included as case country for two technical support documents in the area of environmental services and in textiles. The study on environmental concerns and services has been completed, while the study on the textile and clothing sector is underway.
